Refrigerator not cooling but the freezer is — what's wrong?
Short answer: in nine out of ten Akron kitchens with this exact symptom, it's either the evaporator fan motor or the defrost system. Both are common repairs, both cost in the $200–$320 range, and both are usually finished on the first visit.
Modern refrigerators with a single compressor and a freezer-side evaporator coil cool the fridge compartment by blowing cold air from the freezer through a duct into the fridge. If the air doesn't move, or if the coil is iced over and there's nothing to blow, the fridge gets warm while the freezer stays cold (because the freezer is sitting next to the cold coil itself).
How to tell if it's the evaporator fan
Open the freezer and listen with the door open and the door switch held in (so the lights stay off but the fan stays on). You should hear a steady fan whir. If you hear nothing, or you hear a rattle/grind, that's the evaporator fan. Repair runs about $220–$300 in Akron.
How to tell if it's the defrost system
Pull the back panel inside the freezer. If the evaporator coil has a wall of frost across it, the defrost system has failed. The defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost control board is the cause. Repair runs $180–$280 once we identify which component.
What it's almost certainly not
Not the compressor. If the compressor were dead, the freezer would be warm too. Not the thermostat — those rarely fail in the way that produces this exact symptom. Not low refrigerant — sealed-system leaks usually warm both compartments at once.
What to do right now
Don't keep opening the door — every open lets warm air in and makes the problem worse. Move anything that needs to stay cold into a cooler, or into the freezer if it can handle it for a day. Then book a refrigerator repair visit. Most calls in Cuyahoga Falls, Stow, Tallmadge, and Fairlawn get same-day service.
